Portsmouth Cemetery Photos

On Friday, 10 May 2002, Fiona Broome taught a class in Ghost Photography at LightLines, in Portsmouth, NH. After an hour of basic instruction, the class went outside to take pictures.

The evening was somewhat windy, but otherwise dry and bugfree. The cemetery is near houses, but has no artificial light within the cemetery walls.

As usual, Fiona took two photos or more of each subject, and each picture in each set was taken within two seconds of each other, as soon as the flash was recharged.

Here are some of the unretouched photos taken that night, that produced anomalies:

first photo, no significant anomalies

second photo, several anomalies

Analysis: In the top photo, the orbs over the light grey stone (on the left) are normal in most "haunted" settings. With higher contrast in the photo lab, the orbs would be far more vivid, as they are on the negative.

The anomalies on the lower photo must be discounted because some (but not all) of the factors may have been from natural influences.

The reddish highlights at the top could have been from Fiona's hair getting in front of the lens.

The oval-ish sorb in the lower left area is a classic bug image, although the night seemed to be bug-free. However, the huge orb in front of the light grey stone on the left is not so easy to explain, and may be one of several genuine anomalies ("ghost orbs") in the photo.

If it was a reflection from the headstone behind it, we'd probably see the same kinds of reflections--or at least a hint of them--in other photos taken there. As you can see, the stone wasn't that reflective.

CEMETERY LIGHTS?

In the next two photos, we first guessed that the light was a headlight from the road nearby, that simply moved slightly out of view in the second photo. However, when we revisited the cemetery to check this, the camera had been pointed towards a heavily wooded area, not towards any roads.

There were no lights in the cemetery when the photo was taken. There is no natural explanation for this weird light, and the wooded area in back of it has produced high EMF readings in the past.

The second photo may include some genuine anomalies, but that may be Fiona's red hair in that picture as well, so the anomalies must be discounted.
