Ghosts Cams in Haunted Places

©2006 by Fiona Broome and the Hollow Hill Staff

Ghosts cams (or 'ghostcams') are always fun to visit if you're hoping to spot a ghost. Many of these free, online cameras vanish from the Internet as quickly as they appear. Here are our favorites, as well as a list that's current as of March 2006:

OUR FAVORITE GHOST CAMS

Ghost Watch - This is one of the best, most popular ghost cams online, and it's been around for more years than most.

Look for the ghost of Helen Blunden, who died in a fall in this Belfast, Ireland mill in 1912. The site features a recording of Ms. Blunden's voice, made three months before her death. There's a lot more interesting info at this great website. Most sightings occur around midnight in Ireland, which is about 7 p.m. Eastern time in the U.S. (There are five hours difference between the eastern US and Ireland... and the UK, as well.)

Ireland's Eye Ghostwatch

Thousands have seen ghosts on the dozen cameras at June Houston's GhostWatcher.com. Over 5000 reports appear at the site, with photos.

We get an eerie feeling every time we watch the many cameras at The Abandoned Hospital, provided by the Oklahoma City Ghost Club.

MORE GHOSTS, MORE GHOST CAMS

The USS Lexington engine room has been haunted for years, which is fitting for a ship called 'The Blue Ghost.' Their ghostcam website isn't always easy to navigate, but some of their photos are startling.

The ghost cams at Willard Library in Evansville, IN haven't been working recently, but we hope that the problem will be fixed, soon. Their famous Lady in Grey has been seen often on camera and detected by ghost detecting equipment. This site has been a favorite among ghost hunters for years.

Click on 'Ghost Cam' to watch for ghosts aboard the Queen Mary. We've been impressed by what we've seen there, so far.

We also like the Ordsall Hall Ghost Cam, especially the Star Chamber. If you don't want to sit and watch, you can see every image from the past 24 hours, by just clicking on links.

We've seen orbs in the infrared webcam in Les Catacombes de Paris, but that's what we'd expect in that damp environment. However, with its history, the location has potential.

We're intrigued by the BBC's webcam at Llancaiach Fawr Manor. It updates every five minutes between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. local time, and you can watch it in a pop-up window while you're visiting other sites.

The Haunted Diary is one of those 'love it or hate it' kinds of sites. The ghost cam is in a home near Gettysburg.

GHOSTS...? WHAT GHOSTS?

We like the Llancaiach Fawr Manor ghosts cam, linked above, but we're disappointed that the BBC bothers with this brief, boring footage from the Newstead Abbey 'SpookCam'. Their captures are jokes, btw.

We're not sensing anything paranormal at their Cambridgeshire radio studio webcam either, despite their suggestions of 'strange voices' and apparitions. Please let us know if they replace these with something interesting.

And, for the many websites copying each others' links to the "Boudon Street" webcam, that was a typo. The camera is on Bourbon Street at a karaoke bar called The Cat's Meow, and the only spirits you're likely to see at that street corner are the ones sloshing out of visitors' glasses as they wander from one party/bar to the next!

Oh, we believe that New Orleans is easily the most haunted city in America. No contest! And, that particular corner is just feet away from an area that should be haunted. (Look to the left side of the screen for the most haunted area.)

But, having spent nearly two years doing research in New Orleans--both before and after Hurricane Katrina--we would be astonished if anyone spotted an actual ghost 'on camera' unless it's a very foggy night.
