Ghosts in Louisiana

©2006 by Fiona Broome and the Hollow Hill Staff

Louisiana may be the most haunted state in the U.S. It has a turbulent history, under the ownership of the French, Spanish, and Americans, and a well-documented pirate history.

New Orleans' French Quarter, River Road, and other sites such as The Myrtles Plantation are profoundly haunted. Many of these sites will turn skeptics into believers in a matter of hours.

Finally, Louisiana has a very high water table. Researchers know that there seems to be a link between water and how intensely ghosts are able to manifest. So, the raw materials for hauntings abound in this eerie, beautiful state.

Here are some of our articles about Louisiana's ghosts:

  • New Orleans
    • Ghosts in New Orleans - Jan 2006
      • Our report on the city and cemeteries of New Orleans, shortly after Hurricane Katrina.
    • Ghost Hunting in the French Quarter after Katrina
We spent a busy weekend visiting the French Quarter's haunted sites, and discovered that it's more vividly haunted than ever. In this article, we tell you why you should get to New Orleans as soon as possible.
    • Brennan's Restaurant - Haunted picture in the Red Room
Monsieur LeFleur arranged for three funerals, and then returned to his French Quarter townhome to kill his wife, his son, and himself. His portrait remains in the room where the murders took place, and some say that his expression changes from a gentle smile to a sinister sneer. See our unretouched photos and decide for yourself.
    • Haunted New Orleans - Jackson Square ghosts
See our eerie 'ecto' photo taken at Jackson Square. In colonial times, the square was the site of military exercises and executions. Are these strange red and blue orbs reminders of the many soldiers who lived--and sometimes died--at this haunted site?
    • Orbs on Gov. Nicholls Street
      • It's a private residence bearing an historical marker, and our research team knew on sight that it was a good location for ghosts. While our local tour guide was raving about some JFK-associated house across the street, our researchers captured these orbs in photos.
    • Ghost orbs over home of 'Voodoo Queen'
      • Are these 'ghost orbs' at the home of 'Voodoo Queen' Marie Laveau? Read our debate over the orbs and the history of the huse.
  • St. Francisville
    • The Myrtles Plantation
    • Grace Church cemetery
