Halloween Pumpkins & Parties

Halloween Pumpkins & Parties : 101 Spooktacular Ideas is another great, idea-filled book from Better Homes & Gardens.

This one starts with a series of easy patterns (stencil-type designs) that you can enlarge to fit the size of your pumpkin. If you're carving pumpkins with children, especially small children, these patterns are ideal for a memorable family Halloween project.

Over 50 colorful pages show original and clever ways to make your jack-o-lanterns unique. Some involve carving, but others can be created with a simple coat of paint, and purchased trim or construction paper cutouts.

And, there is even a special section with ideas for teeny tiny pumpkins. When my daughters were little, they loved tiny little pumpkins... I wish I'd had this book, then!

If your family loves to decorate with pumpkins, this is a must-read book for this year's celebration.

The next section of the book shows wonderful ways to decorate for Halloween. My favorite is "staring silverware," using black polymer clay, inexpensive dolls' eyes from the crafts store, and stainless steel silverware. (This is a great project for discount silverware, or yard sale finds.)

But, this book also features original ways to decorate your home, plus more seasonal projects to make your glasses and dishes... with patterns and templates to guarantee your success.

The recipes in the next chapter will appeal to every family member. From "Body parts pizza" to "Rat cake," there's something ghoulish for everyone. And, for a large gathering (or a very hungry family), the boa constrictor sandwich idea will impress everyone... with a smile!

The final chapter includes a wide range of costumes, treats, and decorating ideas. Some are predictable, such as the Red Riding Hood and witch costumes, but projects such as the polymer clay bone bangles are original.

I especially like the idea of creating easy etched glass jars to hold Halloween candies. It's an idea that I'll adapt to other seasons, too.

If your family decorates with pumpkins--and lots of them--this book is a must-own. The ideas will keep you busy for years.

Otherwise, this is probably a good book to borrow from your public library. Check early to be certain that they own a few copies. If not, recommend this book; every public library should have a copy or two, for patrons to enjoy.
