Disney's Haunted Mansion

Welcome, foolish mortals, to this UNofficial page about Disney's Haunted Mansion's ghostly references. This is the final page of five in the Madame Leota seance series.

An academic study of
The Seance Circle
-the significances of Madame Leota's Chamber-
Pages: 1 2 3 4 5

All of these references are from the script of the Seance Circle:

"Wizards and witches, wherever you dwell..."

Contrary to popular opinion, a wizard is not always a "male witch."  A witch can be male or female.  The word wizard means a man who is skilled in the occult arts.  He may be practicing witchcraft, or he may be involved in another tradition.

A warlock is also not a "male witch."   The word warlock comes from the Scottish tradition, and indicates an oath-breaker or traitor.

A witch is someone who practices a nature-based belief system or religion.  He or she may worship one God or Goddess (or neutral being), sometimes as "God," or a name from an ancient culture.  The identity, as Supreme Being, is usually the same, no matter what the context.  Some witches worship several gods and/or goddesses, or a hierarchy that has one Supreme Being and a group of lesser gods.

Witches do not worship Satan or the Devil.  In fact, many witches adhere to the traditional belief that there is no "Satan" as popularly represented in the media.  They say it's blasphemy that anything God created could be that evil, or any real threat to God and His/Her creations.

The witches portrayed in the popular media and during Halloween, with tall black hats and green warty faces, are completely different from "real" witches.  Some witches are understandably offended by this imagery, others see it as great fun as long as we all understand that it's fiction.

The occult images in Disney's Haunted Mansion are generally silly and frivolous, but not disrespectful. That's the fun of this great attraction.

"Give us a hint by ringing a bell..."

The bell is primarily a reference to the noises made famous during seances, at the peak of the Spiritualist Movement in the mid-to-late 19th century.  However, the word bell has other eerie connotations, such as "Ask not for whom the bell tolls..."
