An academic study of
The Seance Circle
-the significances of Madame Leota's Chamber-
Pages: 1 2 3 4 5All of these references are from the script of the Seance Circle:
"Creepies and crawlies, toads in a pond..."
Creepies refers to the late 18th century phrase "creepy," meaning anything which makes the flesh seem to creep. The sensation is caused by repugnance, horror, or dread. By the middle of the 19th century, anything which caused this sensation might be called a "creepy-crawly."
Toads have a long and colorful mythological history. They do not cause warts, and most of them will not turn into handsome princes when kissed.
Toads are a group of tailless amphibians of the genus Bufo. However, by the mid-16th century, the word "toad" was used to mean anything hateful or loathsome.
In the Bible, Exodus, Chapter 8, the land is cursed with frogs, not toads. Frogs are from the genus Rana, and are different from toads.
Toadstools, another name for poisonous mushrooms, signify a spot where the faeries have danced at night. When you see a circle of toadstools, that is a "faerie ring," and it is dangerous to step inside the circle; the faeries can capture you if you do.
"Let there be music from regions beyond..."
In addition to the music played by "spirits" during the peak of the Spiritualist Movement, music is often linked to ghosts. There are many stories of ghosts who return when a favorite piece of music is played.
Other stories claim that some spirits manifest by playing music, either by turning on an old record player, or by causing the radio to abruptly play a particular tune.
Additional tales tell of hauntings where music could be heard, but there was no earthly source for it.
